These displays are small, only about 0.96″ measured in diagonal, but high readability due to the high contrast of an OLED display. This display resolution is 128 x 64 OLED pixels. The pixels on the display is controlled by microcontrollers and light up when activated the pixel, no backlight is required and reduces the power consumption to run the OLED.
The driver chip, SSD1306 can communicate in I2C. The power requirements depend a little on how much of the display is lit but on average the display uses about 40 mA from the 3.3V supply. Built into the OLED driver is a simple switching charge pump that step up 3.3V to 5V to drive the OLEDs.
